The People We Miss: On Second Chances and Reaching Out

The friendships that fade rarely end in a fight. They end in silence — and silence is reversible.

Most of the people we lose, we don't lose in a dramatic falling-out. We lose them to busyness, to a move, to a message we meant to send and never did.

There's a particular ache in realising you've drifted from someone who once knew you well. We tell ourselves it's been too long, that it would be awkward, that they've surely moved on. Usually none of that is true. Most people are quietly hoping someone else reaches out first.

Send the message

You don't need an occasion. ‘I was thinking about you’ is enough. The worst case is a warm, slightly awkward exchange. The best case is getting a piece of your life back.

We rarely regret the messages we send. We regret the ones we kept drafting in our heads.
