Southeast Asia is one of the few places where a modest budget still buys a rich week — once your flights are paid for. Here's how roughly $100 a day actually breaks down across Thailand and Vietnam, beds and street food included.
Accommodation runs $12–25 a night for a clean private room or a well-run hostel. Street food — some of the best on earth — is $1.50 to $4 a meal, so eating well costs under $12 a day. Local transport, from sleeper trains to ride-hailing bikes, rarely tops $10. That leaves real room for the things you came for.
Where the money goes
Budget a day each for a cruise through Ha Long Bay, an afternoon in the temples of Chiang Mai, a hands-on cooking class, and a long-tail boat between islands. These are the line items worth not skimping on — $20–40 experiences that end up being the memories. The savings come from sleeping simply and eating like a local, not from missing out.
Seven days, around $700 on the ground. It's not luxury, but it doesn't feel like sacrifice either — which is rather the point.
